KC Select 96/97 wins Murray Cup! May 2008 |
|
|
The KC Select 96/97 girls traveled to Indianapolis, IN to compete in one of the most competitive tournaments in the region, the Murray Cup, hosted by the Carmel United Soccer Club. The U11 age group was one of the most competitive age groups in the tournament with 21 teams applying. The girls were given a top seed in one of the brackets in the top division. In other brackets in this age there were top-ranked teams from Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio South, including teams ranked in the top 10 in the region and top 25 in the nation. Once again, though, the girls rose to the occasion, going undefeated in pool play, beating Carmel United Premier Blue 3-0, beating Dynamo 97 Red 3-1, and beating top-ranked Ohio Elite Academy 4-1. In the quarterfinals, the girls faced a very fast and physical Westside United Green 97 team, but ground out another shutout 1-0, putting them on a collision course with their friends from Illinois, the Knockouts II. The girls scored two goals in the first ten minutes of the game and held onto a 2-1 win. In the final, they were up against a very skilled, possession oriented team in the top ranked Carmel United 97 Academy team, which had also gone undefeated in pool play. The girls played a fast and physical game which resulted in a 2-0 win to take the championship cup. Along the way, the girls defeated teams ranked in their respective states, the region and the nation as follows:
- Ohio Elite Academy - ranked #2 in Ohio South and #9 in Region II
- Westside United Green 97 - ranked #5 in Indiana
- Knockouts II - ranked #3 in Illinois, #7 in Region II and #20 in the nation
- Carmel United 97 Academy - ranked #2 in Indiana
This is a great result, showing that the KC Select 96/97 girls can compete with some of the top teams in the region. Congratulations girls!! |

KC Select 96/97 are Semi-finalists in Tulsa Thunder Friendship Cup April 2008 |
|
|
The KC Select 96/97 girls made their first trip to Tulsa, OK for the Tulsa Thunder Friendship Cup. The girls played up an age to the U12 11 v. 11 division, and were matched up against some very good teams from Oklahoma and Arkansas in pool play. Not to fear, though, because the girls once again went 3-0 in pool play, defeating the Tulsa Thunder Germany team 3-1; next they defeated the Bixby Highlanders, a big and physical team, 2-0; and finally they defeated an equally large Arkansas Rush U12 girls team 2-0. Their success put them on a collision course with their friends TSC 97 Red in the semi-final. In a pretty even match, a couple of bad hops of the ball and some unlucky plays led to a 3-0 loss to a very good TSC team. The TSC Red team went on to win the final against a very large Little Rock Futbol Club team. |

The KC Select 96/97 girls traveled to Springfield, Missouri to play up in age to the U12 11 v 11 division against some very powerful, regionally successful U12 teams. This relatively new team of girls was a little nervous about playing such powerful U12 teams, but their concern soon turned out to be misplaced as they won their bracket by winning two games and one tie. The girls beat a good Hurricane Futbol Club - Gibson U12 team 4-1, and then beat a very big and powerful Springfield Soccer Club Red team 3-2. This led to a showdown with the final team in the bracket, the Norman Fury from Norman, OK. The Norman team was ranked #3 in the state of Oklahoma in the U12 age group, so the KC Select 96/97 girls knew they had their work cut out for them. They played lights out against the larger and more physical team to end in a 1-1 draw, which sent them through to the final. In the final, they were matched up against one of the best U12 teams from the Kansas City area, the Blue Valley Stars United. The girls played their hearts out, but eventually lost 2-0 to the Blue Valley team. There was nothing to be ashamed of as this was a great result and a true indication of how really competitive this team is going to be! |
